What are people's view on the current backroom staff? Seems to me we have too many 'yes' men since Mark Beard left.
Watching BoA (Fylde game) they are all clearly very wary of saying the wrong thing, or indeed approaching Marc with questions. Have a look around the one hour mark of the extended cut (for those of you that have access to it).
I appreciate it might be tricky dealing with such a strong character, but we do need more strong characters otherwise what's the point? And I'm starting to think that's why Ross left, too.
Lol, Marc's way or the highway.
I certainly feel there should be changes next year if Dorking are going to challenge for promotion (assuming relegated) or stay up again (if survive).
Marc does a great job and his commitment and passion is amazing, considering he runs a company too, but I think he needs someone to do one of the roles he does, depending on what is his least favourite job. The new CEO should be able to do some of the tasks, but I think he needs to look at getting an experienced coach/assistant manager with different ideas, and a recruitment specialist. Obviously cost will be an issue, especially as squad needs overhaul. Probable relegation, may actually help this, as the overhaul can be spread over two years, although it would be better if could stay up.
Not sure about "yes men" as such but I do think we're missing experienced coaches for this level. I would love to see Beardy back in.
Recruitment hasn't been great in recent years (especially in defensive areas) so I would like to see some more investment in scouting/personel.
They are unpaid volunteers and Marc must be happy with them all or they'd soon be out on their ear.
"Why would I leave to join a League Two club? We're going there anyway!" - Marc White
@calvertskans What is interesting is that last season when we brought in Francomb and TC, it boosted our defensive to the point it helped us stay in the league. There seemed to be many people that thought TC was a favorite player for the help he brought in the last half of the season. We have had more clean sheets this season (brought to in part by Safehands Solo), but still have an abysmal GD.
@robh TC and Francomb were both good signings in isolation but we needed others around them that were younger and more athletic. Hollis and Cook were both fairly iffy and Lankshear/Procter were both a disaster really.
It’s normally impossible to say what goes on behind closed doors but with BoA the door is at least half open, and you definitely get the impression that Marc has complete control over tactics and team selection. This is unlikely to be all down to the editing.
I agree it is worth investing in recruitment and an experienced coach who feels able to challenge Marc, constructively. A Peter Taylor for a Brian Clough!? Not sure who would take the job though …
@baggy I think Mark Beard kind of fulfilled that role. Definitely a strong character..
We have not looked the same this season without Beard.
That is not a coincide in my book.
Both in terms of tactics and in terms of player well being there has been deterioration.
I thought at times our tactics were bizarre this season, when we had a 35 year old Prior running channel balls against fast NL league defenders it was definitely a head scratching moment to watch.
The absence from the squad of any CF with pace, also bizarre from a squad management perspective.
