It's that time again - local rivals Horsham away in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. Last year saw a horrific 2-0 defeat against a depleted Wanderers XI but let's hope this years depleted Wanderers XI can fare better.

The Horsham side contains two ex-Wanderers in the form of Isaac Philpot and Charlie Hester-Cook, while Sami El-Abd remains as a coach.

Brennan Camp, Aaron Kuhl, Luke Moore and James McShane remain mid to longer term absentees while you would expect Barry Fuller and Jordan Norville-Williams to miss out also. Rhys Murphy is expected to come back to the side but there is no news on the worrying injury thta Josh Taylor suffered against Weymouth. Bobby-Joe Taylor apparently serves the last game of his suspension even though he already has missed the last 3 matches. Josh Brooking is apparently also unlikely to feature to avoid being cup-tied.

Predictions

Horsham 1-1 Dorking (Craig)

2,674 att.

                           Foulkes

          Francomb     Craig      Gallagher

Briggs        Pybus         McManus       Bowerman

                            Carter

                    Prior          Murphy

Subs: Cahusac, Brown, Wooster, Myles, Muitt, Rutherford, Rawlins

I reckon Briggs will be rewarded with a start after some really good recent performances. Pace of our back 3 really concerns me and we don't really have any other options if they pick up an injury...

I saw that, does anyone know who he is?

I had a disagreement with him last season after he called for Marcs head after losing to Fylde. He only seems to pop up when Dorking lose a few

Way too many players well under par today. I include senior pro's like Tony Craig in that. Alfie totally anonymous. Harrison on goal one of very few to emerge with any credit (kept us in it to be honest). Totally fair result.

Marc totally right to mention dickhead fans, there was a northerner appeared at the end (when the players were thanking our fans) shouting in a booming northern accent loads of criticism and abuse. Don't need people like that (had loads of them at Macclesfield and Rochdale last season). One of our fans put him right and advised that's not what we do.

Vast vast majority of what I call the BoA 'northern fans' are supportive and positive people, there's just a few who don't support in the way that our regular away lot do, which is always positive and behind the team in the ground. I did think when we went down at least we won't have vocally negative northerners at the games this season.

Supported them in the Ryman, supported them up ladders over stadium walls all through covid, will support then whether they are successful or not.

Marc is going nowhere. Thank goodness for that, for better, for worse. It wouldn't be the same without him anyway. Remember when he was on a stadium ban and couldn't do the comms. It was just not the same.

I am as pissed off as anyone but am of course sticking with it through the difficult times, the good times will be all the sweeter whenever they come.

Looking forward to Weston already, this club is the brilliant people not the results.

I really feel for Mark in this post match interview. He is funding the club to a massive amount now, and as soon as we went from part time to full time its not working.

We need to give the lads our full support now, its a great club, and we know Mark will turn it around. He is doing everything he can to turn it around.

He did say about if things don't change fast they can go back to training on cold nights. We never got 12 promotions training at swanky facilities at Reigate Grammar, they did it training 2 nights a week. Often 1 if we had a game on the Tuesday night.

I think a few players think the cup doesn't matter to this club. It absolutely does. Horsham made just under a million quid for their run to round 2 last season including a home game on live terrestrial tv against Barnsley. It massively matters. See them get Sittingbourne or Canvey Island now, and go all the way.

I hope it is wrong but there is a rumour going round that if TC plays a certain number of games it triggers a contract extension. On current performances please no.

I don't think it's always the plastic pitches for all the injuries either. Apart from Alfie the rest of the subs spent half time standing on the pitch chatting, not doing any sort of warm up or movement. Dan Gallagher came on shortly after half time and would have been stone cold. Some of the players just aren't professional enough.

That was a feisty post match interview from Marc, and I’m totally behind him.

Interesting point about the warm up David. I did notice Alfie warming up like mad just before HT, and the others not so much.

There’s definitely a group of players who Marc’s been loyal too, are a season or a two past their best and are maybe just a little comfortable at the club. Desire wasn’t there today.

Onwards and upwards(hopefully). Wish I was going next week as I’m sure there will be an improvement from today

Incidentally, I spotted on twitter that our new striker played for St Ives today (and got man of the match)

I knew he was cup tied, so couldn't play for DW today

But I had no idea he would play one last time for his old club today!

Imagine if he had got injured lol!!!

Knowing our luck he’ll get injured on his debut for us anyway. He does look a good prospect though

@gary-munnery This all comes down to the fact that he needed a big clear out after last season, but decided to retain the majority of the squad for this season. As he mentions in the interview a fair few are going through the motions, and he needs to get rid of those who are that point in their careers. We could see this last season, its the reason why the team went down without a fight during the relegation struggle.

11 games without a single win until the end of the season points to issues, and those were not resolved and have carried through to this season.

There is no point in getting angry at this point, he needs to fix the issue and that involves getting rid of the dead wood.

I can take us losing matches and these sorts of results do happen in FA Cup matches but the manner of that was seriously dissapointing and concerning. We were considerably worse than we were last season and only had two or three chances of note across the entire 90 mins.

First half was actually a fairly even contest which we probably shaded in terms of possession and control. Fenelon had one chance that Foulkes pushed on to the post but that was about it. Looked like a deliberate plan by Marc to just stay in the game for the first half and hope that superior fitness got us over the line in the second half. That did not work.

Second half was an absolute shambles as soon as Carter went off injured and we completely lost the midfield battle. Pybus and McManus are far too defensive minded to play together without a creative player in there as well but unfortunately we just had no other options. On the subject of Carter going off injured, I was on the other side of the pitch so couldn't see how bad the cut was. Was it really needed for him to be subbed off? Could he not have just been bandaged up like the Horsham player was?

Wide players were fairly poor with no real end product and Murphy and Prior were even worse. We're absolutely crying out for a proper left winger as Muitt and Briggs can't play there and i'm not quite sure Bowerman is good enough for a title challenging side. We need JNW back asap. Not really sure why we're starting Prior if he was an injury doubt heading in to the game and suffering from a sickness bug. Wouldn't you rather start Alfie and have Prior on for the last 20-30 mins to defend corners, etc?

Defensive issues felt very similar to last season; pacey wide players causing the likes of Francomb, Craig and Gallagher issues. Brooking looked ok considering it was his first start of the season and is new to the club but the rest were poor. I have to be very honest, Dan Gallagher looks absolutely well off it this season. Admittedly, he has had no pre-season and a very lengthy injury lay-off, so it is understandable but he should be nowhere near this team at the moment, even with the injury crisis.

As others have said, Foulkes the only player to emerge with any credit and one of the few "positives" to take from the game. The other positive being losing the game was probably a better outcome than drawing it as it means one less fixture to play at the moment. A free weekend next week will be a much needed rest, although I wonder if there is an idea to get the Hemel Hempstead away game that day rather than on a Monday considering they also lost yesterday.

Alexandrou sounds like a real talent so it will be great to have him involved against Weston, and Bobby-Joe returning is a much needed boost to the wide positions as well. Sounds like McManus (and Muitt) picked up injuries yesterday so I am assuming we will see Milsom sign this week as well. I'll be honest though, I am not expecting much from that game and I don't see results picking up until the Hornchurch game early next month...

Very good summation Tom, said it much better than I could.

Marc described Carter's injury as a cut to his eye. Maybe he could have continued, we won't know. I imaging he will be expected to play against Weston (patched up of course)

Bobby Joe returning - I agree this will be a positive. I am not so sure Marc thinks he has a big future at the club though, just my gut feeling.

Saw Niall pull a muscle in his upper leg right in front of us, and then limping at times thereafter.

Milsom - if we do sign him it has to be short term 1 or 2 month contract. Don't need to get stuck long term with a 37 year old that apparently hasn't played since January - goes against everything the club is trying to do.

Thinking back on Marc's post-match interview, I totally get what he meant in terms of our fans - he was referring to the one or two 'Marc out' people you typically see on the facebook fan page. Still wierd hearing him telling such people to F off though, what other manager would have the ability to vocalise those sentiments. And for what it's worth I agree I would rather have 20 away fans again than have idiot negative people booing the team.

I don't expect anything at Weston, but I go there in hope and in good voice nevertheless.

I wasn't at the game Saturday, so can't comment on the fitness or effort of the players on the day. Thanks for the summaries. Sounded like much of the same: lots of possession, little end product in terms of chances created.

In this situation, it is harsh to blame the players too much: they are acting under instruction - and they do get plenty of that during the game from Marc. The plan to get the ball wide and sling crosses over seems to work most works - it is just not producing any goals! Whether that is down to fitness, not enough aggression, players in the box, I don't know.  I am no coach (although I have the same number of badges as Marc 😀 ) but if other teams see us play the same way week in week out, it must be easier to set up to defend the wide areas and crosses.  There has to be some variety and variations. Even Pep does that, whilst not departing from his ball playing principles. A load of injuries is perhaps the best time to adjust the tactics. Eg Josh Brooking seems to have the ability to bring the ball out of defence and pick a pass - something we have lacked in recent seasons.

I don't like to see Marc questioning the commitment of the players in public. Maybe it is his way of motivating them - let's see at Weston on Saturday.  FWIW, I think Bobby Joe is always massively committed and usually generates forward momentum whenever possible. Look forward to seeing him back on Saturday, hopefully with a few others too.
